Planting 110 spruce trees on Vitosha

About this cause

At Surya Foundation we're organising a new eco-initiative near Aleko hut on Vitosha and we need your help!
We'll be planting 110 spruce trees on a plot we started working on last spring with volunteers. We've come back several times since then to hoe and clear the saplings — care that's essential if they're to take root and survive.
Please keep in mind that because of the scale of the campaign, volunteer spots are limited, so you'll need to sign up in advance via the form below.

Tips for volunteers:
No prior planting experience needed. All you need is willingness to help and a good mood.
Make sure you bring drinking water and maybe a small snack.
Dress appropriately — long trousers, layers you can put on and take off depending on the weather.
Wear comfortable shoes with good grip for uneven ground.
A cap with a visor is recommended.
Prolonged sun exposure can be dangerous — use sun protection.
Bring a backpack or bag with personal items you think will come in handy.
About the reforestation and how we work
Reforestation isn't a one-off action — it includes planning, planting and follow-up care so the forest can grow healthy and strong. The process usually goes like this:
We plant new saplings — choosing the right species and locations for them to thrive.
We care for them throughout the season — hoeing, clearing and monitoring to help them take root.
The following season we come back and replace any missing saplings to make sure the forest grows thick and healthy.
Last year, with big-hearted volunteers, we planted 250 new spruce trees in partnership with Sofia State Forestry, and 140 of them successfully took root. Over 50% success rate on a first planting is a really good result. Care given with love always pays off.

Why it matters to plant and care for the forest
Forests are vital for the planet and for us — they:
clean the air and reduce pollution;
hold water and support soil balance;
provide a home for wildlife and rich biodiversity;
create cool shade and natural shelter against climate change.
